It’s done! I’ve finally finished my final year major project. UN[BOX]ED is a magazine project involving the exploration of subcultures and stereotypes associated with them. My approach, was to try and establish a magazine where in around 40+ pages, you could learn about an individual who wasn’t a celebrity, but who is a unique individual who could be spotted anywhere on the street.

Take a moment to see my full process on my student wordpress blog here!

So happy I got through all of this!

It’s 2013, I’m a design student who has been doing just that, designing. However, my main passion which is illustration has taken a complete back seat to my university work and I’m beginning to question my original intentions of a style.

Looking into so many styles of illustration, editorial work, illustration for apparel, character design. I’ve decided to myself, that I need to start again. As soon as I’m finished with my main design project, and most of my work for my end of year exhibition…. I want to learn from scratch, develop my drawing style, set goals for myself, but most of all, develop my understanding of anatomy, perspective and landscape construction.

I have 3 current yearly goals.

  1. I really, REALLY want to create a character series based on an original summary that i’ve created for them. I picture myself creating a weekly set of images (1 to 3 depending on complexity) based on these characters that I can even possibly feature on a new blog.
  2. I have become slightly obsessed with fashion design, in particular graphic work for textiles, and having a girlfriend who happens to be into Lolita Fashion helps my inspiration for that. So I would love to work on an abstract style that could possibly be applied to textiles.
  3. I generally want to improve my knowledge and approach to tackling a brief that involves a concept. So I want to take a month to create a weekly illustration that is based on a topic that I’ve picked from a story in the newspaper I get on the train (which is called the Metro), I think it could be a great experiment!

In general, I have a lot of things to do, but look forward to more inspiration from me, and possibly some new work as soon as I’m finished with my main university project. I shall not be neglecting this blog like I did before. So more text posts about things I find interesting are going to feature too!

I hope you’re all doing well, stay positive!

Cyclops skull… Brilliance. I wanna fully illustrate this ASAP! #drawing #skull #doodle #rough #personal #cyclops

So, I’m pretty much addicted to collecting books on art and design, last year I picked up some brilliant examples, and this year, there’s so much more to check out!

Namely being:

Girls on Top by Matt Dixon

Matt’s work is amazing, so a book on things that I enjoy, Pin-up, Goth girls and awesome art, seems perfect. Not to mention it’s hella cheap at Forbidden Planet!

Typography Sketchbooks by Steven Heller & Lita Talorico

Ever since I had a look at this book in my university studio, I’ve wanted to own a copy, this must happen this year haha

Alive Character Design by Haitao Su

Again, saw this at Forbidden Planet and I thought it was a firmly versatile book based around character design for people to create characters in their own style, and not necessarily the authors, brilliant.

The A-Z of Visual Ideas by John Ingledew

Leading straight from the awesomeness of 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design,  Laurence King produced this book, that I need to have my hands on.

Juxtapoz Illustration Vol. 2 by Juxtapoz Magazine

Brilliant work featured in this tome of illustration by Juxtapoz, had a look through at Foyles in Central London and thoroughly enjoyed it!

And so, the saving begins :p

This is the face of the man who’s been working on design, like a job finally. The slow progression from career prospective hobby, to simply career is slowly approaching haha

I got my second year grades back! Success it seems!

First for my main Graphic Design module

2:1 for my Professional Practice Module (looking at the industry etc), I was 3 marks away from a First

2:2 for my essay on consumerism and it’s theories etc, 1 mark away from a 2:1.

So I can throughly say I’m incredibly happy with my grades and my progress! A FIRST was what I nearly got last year, I got this year and what I’m aiming for next year.

Gotta keep you all posted, thanks for the feedback, reblogs of astonishing art I find and staying with me on this journey! 5 Years of design (7 if you count before my BTEC) and counting! Can only get better!

blathwillburn:

Nahhh but seriously I’ve been doing some awesome photogram experiments.

This is some practice for the collab I’m doing with Mindstate

So much win, been collaborating with my main girl Blath on some photography featuring my typography and digital pin striping experiments. Looks awesome so far!

The Creation Of A Perfect Human Race

A recent piece of mine for my “Azdeco” final piece booklet for university

I need them. Gonna do a series come summer based on some of my favourite artists, musicians, actors and models around the net and general media.

And I think Matt Drake has to be the first… CULT! \m/

A varied font collection is a usable one! I need to be bursting at the seams with font’s that I can be using right now.

In other news, I’ve finished my second year of my degree, so it’s personal project time! Ideas keep flooding in, so I must make it so!

My entry for D&AD’s Little White Lies Brief. Super 8!
